Enterprise Database Cloud Transformation Architect

Leave a Comment / Cloud Computing / By sea1biz

Years back application supports witnessed that relational database was a big thing.
And we got to learn database design in a project group, installed Unix-based DB software, and also played with PL/SQL statements to see results.

Fast forward today, technology has progressed to the extent that these are now implemented in the Cloud with great success.

… And here I am, received another certification today.

Good to have learned new ways of doing things in a more efficient and cost-effective way. Thanks to Steve for the course.

Learning continues with Cloud provider…….

Tonight we learned from Chirag for one hour and the half and I was rewarded with the followings with tests that followed. Good try.

That shows attention was given fully to the presenter and with good understanding of the subjects.

Thanks Chirag for the course taught with enthusiasm.
Thanks Claudine for arranging the free course too.
And Anna for the info.

Time to migrate your on-premise traditional database to the Cloud ?
Here are some of the reasons why you should.

  1. High Connections Count expected when you have a huge online promotion launch.
    2. A high number of slow SQL queries.
    3. Insufficient Primary Keys.
    4. Duplicate Indexes.
    5. Fast response time needed.
    6. The massive number of rows in tables.
    7. Latency spikes during peak traffic.
    8. Database crashing expected at high volume.

Software Test Summary

Leave a Comment / Floating Solutions / By sea1biz

One of the tasks engineers do is writing report for their works and findings.

Hence, here is a very short summary.

Task: Software evaluation
Technique used: Learn-as-per-use
Results: As per pictures shown below.
Satisfaction level : 8/10
Ease of Use : Generally, good UI design – logical as an engineer thinks. Commands are not difficult to locate.
Will I acquire the tool ? : Likely
When ? : As soon as a project is secured

That concludes and closes this application software usage test during this trying time – efforts well spent.

Will move on to next project soon.
Stay tuned and stay safe !
Cheers !

Ship Stability

Leave a Comment / Floating Solutions / By sea1biz

A ship, ideally, should be upright when free floating. What makes it float this way ?

Well, its Centre of Gravity and Buoyancy counteract to form a couple that will keep it upright when it heels to either the Port Side or Starboard Side due to waves from the sea conditions..

Only a positive Metacentric Height will produce that effect of equilibrium when the ship rolls, else, capsizing is inevitable.

The role of a Naval Architect, in this case, is to work out that crucial value of Metacentric Height for the completed ship by performing a proper Inclining Experiment in calm weather at Lightship Condition. That piece of work is to be conducted in accordance with Rules and Regulations and to be witnessed by a qualified Ship Surveyor from a Ship Classification Society.

The bottom line is, do not take hullform design lightly. Discuss with a qualified Naval Architect with your requirements.

Even Keel

How to ensure a ship remains at even trim ?

The answer ? Hullform design.

The naval architect needs to know where the Longitudinal Centre of Buoyancy is at a given Draught the ship is operating, apart from knowing its Longitudinal Centre of Gravity, combination of which results in a Trimming Moment.

Trim by the Bow is definitely a no-no, neither is an excessive Trim by the Stern.

Hullform Design

Came across an application software in mid-March at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to give it a try.

After some playing around with the trial software, here is the result of the efforts and time spent in scrutinizing the functionalities of the software.

For a practicing naval architect, hull form is an essential design to achieve good resistance coefficient that basically determines the powering requirement to produce needed horsepower for an intended speed.

Nice try.

Ship’s Trim

Leave a Comment / Floating Solutions / By sea1biz

How to keep a ship at even keel on its voyage ?

It is one of the challenges a Naval Architect takes into consideration in designing a usable Hullform.

The relative position of centre of gravity and buoyancy constitutes a trimming moment that will result in changes in draughts forward and aft.

Quite often, Trim by the Bow and excessive Trim by the Stern can be adjusted in loading calculations.
